Landmark Lecture 2025: Who were the Custises? VIRTUAL
Dr. Good will be in conversation with Tudor Place Curator Rob DeHart about her book First Family. The book tells the story of George Washington's step-grandchildren, the Custises, including Martha Custis Peter of Tudor Place. The Custis siblings used their famous family ties to enhance their power and status, becoming celebrities in a soap opera of their own making. They were also enslavers committed to an expanding American empire. Good and DeHart will focus their discussion on the Peter family and enslaved people at Tudor Place, placing them in the broader context of the complexities of fame, family, and race in the nineteenth century.
